Exchanging experiences of promoting justice: A role for lawyers by Dr. Livingston Armytage

On 25 February, a seminar on “Exchanging experience of promoting justice: the role of lawyers in Bangladesh” was held at the R.C Majumder Auditorium, Lecture Theater, Dhaka University as part of its Law and Practice Seminar Series by Bangladesh Legal Aid & Services Trust (BLAST) with the University of Dhaka. The keynote speaker at the event was Dr. Armytage, Director, Centre for Judicial Studies (Adjunct Professor of Law, University of Sydney, Visiting Fellow of Cambridge University). The seminar was also chaired by Ms. Sara Hossain, Honorary Executive Director, BLAST and chaired by Dr. Shahnaz Huda, Chairman, Department of Law, University of Dhaka.
Dr. Armytage’s presentation was focussed on the following two issues: 1. the status of Bangladesh’s judicial system in the international context and 2. the steps that could be taken and the role that lawyers may play to reform and revamp the justice system to make access to justice a reality for all.
The seminar ended with a lively discussion that left the audience, a collection of lawyers, academics, students of University of Dhaka and NGO personnel, more enlightened about the state of the judicial system in Bangladesh and the indispensable need to reform it.
